Rani’s father, Mr. Ram Mukherjee, is a retired film director and one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios, while her mother, Mrs. Krishna Mukherjee was a playback singer. Rani schooled at Maneckji Cooper High School in Mumbai and later graduated at Mithibai College in Mumbai. Rani is a trained Odissi dancer. Rani stepped into Bollywood films with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1996, which has not done so well at box office. After taking break for two years, Rani acted in Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 and both the films were big hits. Apart from Hindi movies, Rani Mukherjee has acted a couple of Bengali and Southern language movies also.
